Lebanese director Nadine Labaki joins Toronto International Film Festival jury

Nadine Labaki, a famous Lebanese actress, director and activist, has joined the jury at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.

Nadine Labaki, who began her filmmaking career in 2007 after the release of her debut film Caramel, which premiered at the Cannes 2007 Film Festival, will join the Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins and Platform Prize-winning filmmaker Anthony Shim at the film festival.

The Toronto International Film Festival, one of the most famous film festivals in the world, will start on 7 September and conclude on 17 September. The Lebanese filmmaker is set to serve on the TIFF Platform jury.

The event will honour bold directors. Reportedly, the films selected for this year’s film festival come from 12 countries across 3 continents. The winner of the competition will get $20,000 Canadian dollars.

Anita Lee, chief programming officer at the Toronto International Film Festival, said, “We have an international dream jury with acclaimed filmmakers Barry Jenkins, Nadine Labaki and Anthony Shim as jury members.”

Nadine Labaki has also been announced as a jury member for the upcoming Venice International Film Festival. She will join Elsa Zylberstein, a French film, TV, and stage actress; Yalitza Aparicio, a popular Mexican actress; Misan Sagay, a famous British-Nigerian screenwriter; and Stefano Savona, a famous Italian director, at the film festival.

The film festival will take place from August 30 to September 9. The annual film festival will be held in Venice, Italy. The jury will assess the films. The event is organized by La Biennale di Venezia. It is directed by Alberto Barbera.

Nadine Labaki became famous as an actress in the early 2000s. Her film Caramel premiered at the Cannes 2007 Film Festival. In 2018, she made history by becoming the first Arab woman to win the Jury Prize for her film Capernaum at the Cannes Film Festival.
