Oman’s New 50% Window Tint Rule Explained: Eligibility, Exceptions and Key Details
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has rolled out a major policy change with regards to vehicle windows tint levels that have made a major improvement to the vehicle regulations policy within the Sultanate by raising the window tint level form 35% to 50% for a range of vehicle windows.
The order follows measures to enhance driver’s comfort in driving during the challenging summer climatic conditions, without compromising road safety standards. Motorists have already expressed interest in the announcement with many asking about the car accessories available that comply, and automotive accessory stores have claimed a sharp increase in customers buying compliant tint films.
This new law allows more flexibility in what vehicle doors can be tinted and sets out quantifiable and technological requirements that have to be adhered to. Miss the rules, and other vehicles can be subjected to penalties and become just as non-compliant as the one you have been spotted with.
What Has Changed Under the New Tint Rule?
Whereas the largest modification made by the Royal Oman Police is in the maximum tint darkness allowed for the side mirrors and rear window windows are 50% as thick as they can legally be in Oman. Motorists were only previously permitted to have a 30% tint on their car windows.
The new regulation is designed to balance cabin comfort for passengers and drivers’ visibility. Authorities believe this will lower the amount of heat inside cars, while maintaining road safety.
Which Windows Can Be Tinted?
The new regulations allow for side windows and rear windows to be window films or tinted to 50% contrast or darkest window tint. This will be applicable to private vehicles that meet the general technical standards laid down by the Royal Oman Police.
The new relaxation hasn’t yet gone into effect, though, for the front windshield. It should be clear, without any dark tint films, which give the driver forward visibility and enable the driver’s line of sight to be unobstructed in front of the car when necessary, and should not obstruct drivers’ lines of sight to the rear.
Factory-Tinted Glass Still Has Separate Requirements
The new rule also covers cars that use tints that have been installed at the factory. These vehicles can be registered/licensed as long as the original window has at least 30% visible light transmission.
It means that they don’t break manufacturer’s recommended safety limits while also affording owners the freedom to enjoy the advantages of the glazing technology.
Are Vehicle Wraps Also Allowed?
The Royal Oman Police confirmed their stance on vehicle wraps and protective film other than window tint. Vehicle wraps and matte-proof protection film continue to be acceptable products as long as they have an approved technical specifications and are the same product finish.
This is important for vehicle owners, especially those who do car painting or have VPIs installed, but do not compromise their vehicle’s integrity, and are keen to understand what effects their paint job has had on their car’s appearance.
Rising Demand Creates Supply Pressure
There was a market demand for new vehicles and their parts that immediately materialised from the announcement with several automotive accessory stores receiving many inquiries in Muscat and other governorates. Some retailers said that they were temporarily short of 50% tint films because of the incredible demand.
The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has also advised businesses to be careful not to exploit the scenario with unfair price hikes. The authorities have once again warned retailers about the importance of trading products at fair prices, especially now that window tint products are in demand meeting compliance standards.
Why Does the Rule Matters?
During the summer months, temperatures in Oman are frequently high, and the heat inside a vehicle can be a significant factor for drivers’ comfort. Darker tinting on the side and back windows will help keep passengers more comfortable, cooler inside, and will decrease air conditioning usage on long trips.
Concurrently, the clear front windshield helps to ensure visibility and the safety of the road, contributing to the government’s efforts to prioritize safety along with comfort.
Tips Before Tinting Your Vehicle
It is important that motorists check that the new window tint film meets the ROP standards prior to fitting. Certified tint film providers and ensuring that warranties of percentage are provided will help reduce the potential for problems in the future when inspections are made.
Drivers should also not tint the windshield or tint side and rear window to more than the allowed amount: otherwise they could incur penalties and/or inspection failures.
