Hollywood is mourning over the death of Val Kilmer, the renowned actor famous for his legendary roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever and The Doors. Kilmer died at 65 as confirmed by his daughter Mercedes Kilmer. According to The New York Times, pneumonia was the cause of death. Kilmer had also fought throat cancer, a condition he was diagnosed with in 2014 and had tracheostomies that greatly impacted his voice.
Born with an acting passion, Kilmer became the youngest student ever admitted to the elite Juilliard School. His career was launched in 1984 with the Cold War parody Top Secret and was soon followed by Real Genius. But it was his depiction of Tom Iceman Kazansky in the 1986 hit Top Gun that gave him global recognition. His depiction of the cocky but talented fighter pilot alongside Tom Cruise’s Maverick earned him a favorite fan status.
Kilmer went on to rise to stardom with lead roles in The Doors as rock legend Jim Morrison and Tombstone where he played the legendary Doc Holliday. In 1995, he suited up as Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever, after Michael Keaton and before George Clooney. Although a huge box office hit, he was caught up in Hollywood’s rollercoaster cycle, appearing in both blockbusters and box office flops.
Kilmer experienced both highs and lows in his career but was committed to his goal. This articulation manifested itself in the stories of him being difficult to work with. Art was always valued significantly more to him than commercially successful film work. His memoir I’m Your Huckleberry and the documentary Val released in 2021 provided insights into his Hollywood narrative.
In 2021 Kilmer returned to the big screen in an emotional way by reprising his role as Iceman in Top Gun as Maverick, a special moment for fans all over the world. His legacy will be defined by his true love for the craft of acting, as much as by what he did on screen. Val Kilmer leaves behind a career that will influence generations and solidifies his status as one of Hollywood’s most memorable stars.
