UAE humanitarian aid, humanitarian aid, Libya floods

Following one of the most devastating natural disasters to strike Libya, the people of Derna faced a desperate situation, urgently requesting international aid. The city, ruthlessly pummeled by relentless rains, now stands as a shattered landscape, with a confirmed death toll reaching thousands and tens of thousands left without shelter.

In response to this unfolding humanitarian catastrophe, the global community has acted promptly, with rescue teams and relief efforts mobilizing to provide assistance to the affected region.

The Catastrophic Impact of the Floods

The Mediterranean tempest known as Daniel wrought havoc and triggered sudden, devastating floods throughout multiple communities in eastern Libya. However, Derna emerged as the epicenter of this calamity, enduring the most severe impact. Whole residential areas were mercilessly washed away, placing an immense burden on overwhelmed hospitals tasked with managing the rising number of casualties.

Health authorities project that the death toll in Derna alone could potentially reach a staggering 2,000 lives lost. Even more distressing is the sobering realization that over 10,000 individuals are currently unaccounted for, underscoring the monumental scope of this unfolding humanitarian crisis.

In addition to the immediate and profound human and property losses, the floods have unveiled the grim truth about Libya’s vulnerable and insufficient infrastructure, adding significant complexity to the already challenging relief and rehabilitation endeavors. The nation, marred by over a decade of upheaval, continues to be fractured along political fault lines, with each faction enjoying backing from distinct militias and foreign entities.

How the United Arab Emirates is Extending a Hand to Libya by sending Humanitarian Aid

Despite the immense challenges on the ground, international support is starting to pour into Derna, offering a glimmer of hope to the beleaguered city. Jordan, acting swiftly, dispatched a military cargo plane laden with crucial humanitarian aid. Algeria, France, Italy, Qatar, and Tunisia, and Turkey have sent rescue teams to assist in the critical search and rescue operations and provide relief supplies to survivors.

Yet, it is the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that has taken a prominent role in this humanitarian mission. Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to extending assistance to those in need, the UAE sent two planes carrying a total of 150 tonnes of essential aid. This encompassed a wide range of supplies, including food, relief materials, and medical equipment. The European Union also rallied to support the relief efforts, with Germany, Romania, and Finland dispatching aid to the flood-ravaged area.

Through its active participation in relief efforts, the UAE has demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian ideals, prioritizing aid and assistance regardless of location, religion, or diplomatic ties. In keeping with the UAE’s unshakable commitment to helping people in need, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed emergency relief aid and dispatched search and rescue teams to Libya, successfully exemplifying the spirit of solidarity throughout this disaster.

Mirroring the actions of other nations, Morocco has graciously accepted assistance from the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), accentuating the significance of international cooperation in times of crisis. These coordinated endeavors exemplify the collective determination of the global community to extend aid to the flood-stricken populace of Derna, Libya.
