Uae and Iraq explore strategies to enhance parliamentary cooperation
On the sidelines of the ongoing 149th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva – being held from October 13-17, 2024 – the Emirati and Iraqi sides explored strategies to enhance parliamentary cooperation.
The meeting also touched on the existing friendly parliamentary relations, focusing on the importance of coordination and consultation during participation in regional and international parliamentary forums, especially on issues of mutual interest, as per media reports.
Importance of developing parliamentary cooperation
The 149th IPU assembly is focusing on the overall theme of ‘Harnessing science, technology and innovation (STI) for a more peaceful and sustainable future’. The five-day event provides a platform for delegates to discuss and galvanize parliamentary action.
During the meeting, Emirati politician Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), stressed the need to strengthen the historic, strategic and brotherly ties shared by the Uae and Iraq and their peoples.
Ghobash highlighted the importance of developing cooperation in different sectors to achieve mutual interests and sustainable development. He underscored the need for enhanced cooperation in economic and investment fields, particularly.
During the meeting, both sides emphasised the value of joint parliamentary cooperation through bilateral talks, exchange of visits and the sharing of expertise to serve national causes, issues and to foster solidarity, eventually contributing to the stability of the region.
Uae and Iraq noting deepening bilateral relations
The Uae and Iraq share a deepening bilateral partnership. The Gulf state has already provided millions of dollars of humanitarian aid to Iraq, besides investing in the friendly country’s infrastructure, agriculture and tourism.
Both countries have inked key agreements to promote economic cooperation and investment. In 2022, the Uae exported $21.2 billions to Iraq. The same year, Iraq exported $3.27 billion to the Uae. The nations have been noting increasing bilateral trade numbers in recent years.
