‘Sukkar’: Arab World’s First Musical Movie to Release in MENA

Sukkar, produced by Saudi-owned MBC Group, regarded as the Arab world’s first musical movie, is set for release in the MENA region. A work of Kuwaiti writer Heba Mishari Hamada, Sukkar is a story about a girl and her friends who live in an orphanage and face difficulties together. It drew inspiration from Daddy Longs Legs, Jean Webster’s novel. 

Sukkar is directed by Tamer Mahdy and features Hala Al Turk who rose to stardom on “Arabs Got Talent” in 2011. 

Sukkar is a Musical, Children’s Journey

This film holds family at heart and relays the story musically – a children’s journey of the main character Sukkar, played by singer Hala Turk, and her friends, overcoming challenges. 

They hold onto their dreams in the hope of a bright future. Ratiba, the head of the orphanage makes lives difficult for the children. 

It’s about transforming lives, having faith and dreams, as well as adding meaning and color to life.

The cast includes Yasmin Al-Abd, Moataz Hisham, Dima Ahmed, Bavly Remon, Hajar Mohamed, and Mohamed Harbi among others. 

Legendary actor Magda Zaki and comedian Mohamed Tharwat also add star power to Sukkar, with musical scores by Ahmed Saad, an Egyptian singer. Heba Meshary Hamada has written the lyrics, with composers Ehab Abdel Wahed and Ahmed Tareq Yehya. 

MBC Groups Takes Sukkar Forward

MBC Group went ahead with the film’s production, with the company’s Executive Producer Lara Ghazal Nassif and Producer Alaa Awada, along with Aroma Production’s Tamer Mortada and Mostafa Al Awadi. 

Sukkar’s costume design was taken up by Mona Tunisi and Ali Hossam Ali as art director. It should be noted that Sukkar was filmed on newly constructed sets, including the orphanage, cityscape and Fruto Palace to give a personal touch.

Sukkar, the world’s first-ever Arabic-language musical production, will hit cinemas in the Middle East on October 12 and will be distributed by Empire Entertainment.  The film will surely rule the box office across the region.
