SpaceX’s Starlink Debuts Internet Service on Boeing 777, Marking Historic Aviation Milestone
For the first time, SpaceX Starlink offered an internet connection during an inflight connectivity test on a Boeing 777 involved in a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to London on October 22. The accomplishment is impressive because the 777 is now the largest and longest-range passenger aircraft that Starlink has been integrated into so far. The implementation success shows that SpaceX has been gradually moving into the aviation domain and is determined to disrupt the on-flight Wi-Fi services.
Expanding Horizons: Qatar Airways’ Starlink Integration
Qatar Airways marked this technological advancement by releasing a press release through Starlink connection from the Aircraft. The airline plans to leverage its connectivity ambitions to serve as a key differentiator by providing all of its Boeing 777 aircraft with free Starlink service for consumers by 2025. In the first flight, interacting with the crew, the CEO of Qatar Airways, Badr Mohammed Al Meer, had a video call with SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, to demonstrate the capability of the system in remote communication.
In fact, the implementation of Starlink on the 777 of Qatar Airways, has already drawn interest from other big airlines. Five major carriers, including United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and airBaltic, have inked deals to incorporate Starlink services into their aircraft proving that the industry’s confidence in SpaceX’s satellite Internet solutions is rising.
Starlink’s Growing Constellation
Starlink has so far ensured that it places more than 6,400 satellites in low orbits with more planned for placement. The company’s grand plan means that the network can reach up to about 40,000 satellites, enhancing the firm’s international reach and services. “This is the bare minimum, and it actually gets much better from here,” Musk said to Al Meer in their video call.
