Saudi NCM Issues Severe Weather Warning: Heavy Rain & Flash Floods to Hit Southwestern Coast Through Saturday

The NCM in Saudi Arabia has issued a severe weather alert for some areas in the southwest corner, where unsettled weather is forecast to persist until Saturday. There is moderate to heavy amounts of rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and flash flooding imminent.

The region likely to be most drastically affected is Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha and various parts of Makkah region including Taif. Residents, motorists and onlookers are encouraged to stay alert till the official weather update and take necessary precautions because the situation can be so unpredictable.

Jazan Faces the Heaviest Rainfall Risk

Some of the most heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Jazan and surrounding areas. The weather system will have an impact on the coastal areas and the Farasan Islands, thunderstorms are likely to increase during afternoon and early evening hours.

Heavy rains may cause fast water to accumulate in areas of low elevation and in wadis. Storms can bring lighting, hail, and strong downdrafts, creating a threat for those outdoors and motorists.

Thunderstorms Across Asir and Al-Baha

Moderate to heavy thunderstorms are also forecast over the mountainous regions of Al-Baha and Asir. Precipitation and runoff into valleys and drainage systems may increase in the vicinity of unstable mountain ranges.

Take extra precautions when travelling on mountain roads. During heavy rainfall, reduced visibility, slippery roads, all of a sudden flooding and strong winds can make for unsafe driving conditions.

Taif and Makkah Region May See Scattered Showers

Some areas in Makkah region may receive lighter to moderate rainfall, mainly during the afternoon hours, at Taif. Sea breezes are also anticipated over the links, but could cause dust and poor visibility on some roads under strong wind conditions.
