Saudi Civil Defence Issues All-Clear After Alerts in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia’s epicentre for civil defense gave emergency warnings to the Riyadh region and neighboring Al-Kharj early Saturday before cancelling the threat a few hours later. The warnings were made via the Kingdom’s National Early Warning Platform, while authorities reacted to suspicions of an air attack.

The first alert issued was at approximately 2:58 a.m. local time, and residents taking films have reported explosions in certain parts of Riyadh. Civil Defence reported that the imminent danger had been lifted. Another alert came a quarter-hour later for Riyadh and Al-Kharj before it was all clear again over a more than 10-minute period.

National Early Warning Platform Sends Emergency Notifications

The Saudi Arabia National Early Warning Platform made notifications directly to affected areas mobile phone users. The alert to the public had come in warning that a foe was approaching in the air and urged residents to adhere to official safety guidelines.

Residents advised to stay out and out of open areas and inside during an emergency. The speedy delivery and cancellation of alerts showed how the national warning system could deliver an alert to the public with regard to potential threats.

Al-Kharj Included in Second Warning

The second early-morning warning included Al-Kharj to the South of Riyadh. It was canceled soon after officials decided that the current threat was over.

This is the latest in a series of air raid alerts in Saudi Arabia, as well as in other nations, including in the lead up to the G20 summit. Civil Defence alerted and later canceled alerts in various areas such as Khamis Mushait, Abha, Jazan and others, due to increased security risks in the region.

Alerts Follow Wider Regional Security Tensions

As the Riyadh warnings came, the number of drones and missiles that took to the skies between Saudi Arabia and Yemen was on the rise. Several incidents in the last few weeks have been reported to have taken place in respective areas of the Kingdom, Saudi authorities reported, where they have sighted the interceptions and reported injuries and property damage in some cases.

Saudi Civil Defence on Thursday said shards of a drone it intercepted crashed in Taif causing one person to die, two others to be injured and buildings and vehicles to be damaged. The incident highlighted the general security situation around the latest alerts.

What Residents Should Do During an Alert?

In a Saudi Civil Defense Riyadh alert the people should respond according to the commands transmitted by the official emergency channels and avoid the misinformation. Avoid staying indoors away from raised windows, doors and other areas; do not resume normal activities until all-clear has been called.

Residents of both and in Al-Kharj have been advised to adhere to official safety measures, although the immediate threat to their lives has passed and warnings have been lifted.
