In a groundbreaking move, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and the National Transformation Program (NTP) are set to introduce Saudi Arabia’s inaugural National Data Index. This significant leap into the realm of open data will be accompanied by the unveiling of an upgraded Open Data Platform and the introduction of the Data Governance Platform. The initiative aligns with the country’s ambitious Vision 2030, emphasizing integrity and fostering a data-driven national economy.
On Monday, Riyadh will play host to a distinguished gathering of local and global experts for a forum dedicated to exploring the potential of open data in Saudi Arabia. The event aims to bolster the Kingdom’s commitment to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and will draw the participation of ministers, senior officials, and representatives from both local and international companies.
The trio of programs—National Data Index, Open Data Platform, and Data Governance Platform—mark a historic milestone in the nation’s technological landscape, echoing the objectives outlined in the National Transformation Program. This initiative seeks to propel Saudi Arabia into an era of enhanced integrity and economic dynamism through a strategic focus on data utilization.
In line with Saudi Arabia’s digital transformation journey, the forum will feature insightful panel discussions led by 13 local and international data specialists. These experts will shed light on the significance of open data, exploring the latest trends and innovative approaches to its application.
At the heart of Saudi Arabia’s “Open Data Strategy” is the mission to provide high-value and reusable open data, fostering transparency and innovation through collaborative efforts. The comprehensive plan includes 26 initiatives spanning awareness and capability building, local and international partnerships, and technology and infrastructure uplift.
The adoption of open data is poised to play a pivotal role in Saudi Arabia’s economic landscape, mirroring global trends. Citing a study by the McKinsey Global Institute, the World Bank indicates that open data, when applied across seven sectors, could generate an astounding $3 trillion to $5 trillion annually in economic value worldwide. Notably, the direct economic value of open government data has been estimated at up to 40 billion euros throughout the European Union and close to 2 billion pounds in the UK.
As Saudi Arabia embraces the era of open data, these initiatives not only signify a significant stride toward digital empowerment but also herald a transformative journey for the Kingdom’s economic landscape. The forum is poised to be a crucible of ideas, shaping the future of Saudi Arabia’s data-driven aspirations.
