Qatar Strengthens Partnership With UN on Global Peace and Development

Doha is building its sagacious and multi-layered ties between Qatar and the United Nations, with the theme of multilateral cooperation, prevention and sustainable development at the heart of Qatar’s international relations. The link is more about tackling the root of crises and not just relying on the time’s assistance.

By working with UN agencies and overseas institutions, Qatar is endeavouring to sponsor actions that foster peaceful development, build up weak communities and sustainable development in areas of economic, humanitarian and security crisis.

Preventive Diplomacy and Crisis Prevention

Preventive diplomacy is key to Qatar-UN cooperation. The Government of Qatar collaborates with various stakeholders, such as the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, UNDP, UNHCR and UNICEF in achieving mediation, conflict resolution and humanitarian access.

The collaboration also focuses on early warning systems, digital mediation, world health security and better access to food and water. The goal of these efforts is to increase the resilience of communities and prevent crises from generating greater impacts.

Expanding Long-Term UN Financial Support

Qatar’s financial relationship with the UN system has also strengthened over the years, with the conclusion of multi-year agreements and contributions of core resources. This will give more institutional certainty to public budgets devoted to, for instance, gender equality, poverty reduction, and humanitarian work under the UN banner.

Qatar’s support of core resources, not just individual emergency projects, feeds into the sustainability of the ability of the UN agencies to plan and implement projects to vulnerable communities in the long term.

Supporting Least Developed Countries

The other critical part of Qatar’s international development policy continues to be for the Least Developed Countries. Qatar is committed to supporting efforts to alleviate structural economic vulnerabilities through financial commitments in the context of the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs.

These are especially significant for the countries exposed to food insecurity and climate related shocks, economic volatility and limited development capacity. The overall goal is to build resilience and increase opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

Education as a Foundation for Peace

Education is yet another key engagement area for Qatar with the UN and international partners. Assessment of learning opportunities for children and youth at risk of losing their learning opportunities during conflict is facilitated through efforts supported by the Qatar Government and the Education Above All Foundation.

The partnership understands that education plays an integral part in human development and social stability and long-term peace, knowing this to be of great significance in communities suffering conflict and displacement affecting access to schools.
