oman launch guidelines for employees

Oman has taken some major steps forward in terms of occupational health standards throughout the Gulf region by systematically enforcing stringent heat safety laws for workers. The Ministry of Health has issued a directive requiring the observance of minimum heat safety measures, thereby transforming the very functioning of businesses in the extreme summer conditions.

In terms of greater detail, the enforced heat safety measures require every employer to reorganize their operations during the intense summer period in Oman. These constitute the most rigorous worker protection regulations set in the region, specifically targeting heat-related hazards that afflict thousands of outdoor workers annually.

Working from construction and outdoor service bodies must come to a complete halt during the noon hour, starting at 12:30 PM and until 3:30 PM throughout June, July, and August as per heat safety measures. It is during these three months of the summer that Oman is at its very warmest with outdoor temperatures often darting past their set limits for safe work.

The updated heat safety rules establish a mandatory rest structure that obliges supervisors to allow a rest break every 45 to 60 minutes during working conditions characterized by high temperatures. These breaks are to be taken in designated cooling areas, which must be suitably ventilated or air-conditioned to ensure the area of heat exposure can be counteracted by the workers.

Wherever such stations of hydration may be set up under the new deployment of heat safety provisions, they will be a topic of discussion among the present provisions requiring employers to ensure access to clean water through all worksites. The regulation makes clear the importance of proper hydration to preventing heat-related medical incidents in outdoor workers.

Indoor workplace modification efforts constitute another important element of Oman’s heat safety rules. Employers must provide adequate cooling, such as air conditioning or industrial fans, to ensure safe working temperature in enclosed spaces. This requirement extends beyond standard office environments to also cover warehouses, manufacturing plants, and temporary work structures.
