ne’ma roadmap uae's bold move to slash food waste by 50%

The ‘Ne’Ma’ Food Loss and Waste Reduction Roadmap was unveiled by Mariam Almheiri, the UAE’s Minister of State for Food and Water Security, marking a significant step towards sustainability and responsible resource management. By 2030, this strategic initiative hopes to reduce food waste in the United Arab Emirates by a bold 50%.

The plan was unveiled at the fourth National Dialogue on Food Security by Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, the Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, as the UAE takes decisive action to address global concerns about food sustainability. “Call for Change: Reducing Food Loss and Waste in the UAE” is the theme of the program, which is being organized by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in association with Ne’ma, the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative.

Understanding the Ne’Ma Initiative

The Ne’Ma Food Loss and Waste Reduction Roadmap represents a comprehensive strategy crafted to tackle one of the most pressing issues in the global food system – food waste. With the goal of reducing food waste by half over the next decade, the initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Roadmap Of Project Ne’Ma

The action plan’s roadmap represents a concerted effort to address the nation’s food security and sustainability.

The event, which included high-level panel discussions, emphasized the significance of having a common understanding of how food waste and loss are essential to achieving circular ecosystems, sustainable consumption, and food security as well as reducing the risks associated with climate change.

“With only a few days until our nation hosts COP28, this event underlines the strong commitment of the UAE in addressing all sectors that have a defining role in addressing the impact of climate change,” Almheiri said in announcing the roadmap. Furthermore, food and agricultural systems are crucial in this context, particularly since food loss and waste represent one of the main issues that humanity has to prioritize resolving.

Here are a few key points of the target of halving food waste by 2030

1. Holistic Approach: The Ne’Ma initiative takes a holistic approach, addressing food waste at every stage of the supply chain. From production and transportation to retail and consumer levels, the roadmap identifies key intervention points to optimize efficiency and minimize waste.

2. Technology Integration: Embracing cutting-edge technology, the Ne’Ma initiative incorporates innovative solutions such as data analytics, AI-driven forecasting, and smart logistics. These technologies play a crucial role in enhancing decision-making processes across the food supply chain.

3. Public Engagement and Awareness: Beyond technological solutions, the Ne’Ma initiative recognizes the importance of public engagement. Awareness campaigns, educational programs, and community involvement are integral components aimed at fostering a culture of responsible consumption and reducing food waste at the consumer level.

4. Collaboration with Stakeholders: Ne’Ma emphasizes the significance of collaboration with stakeholders across sectors. By fostering partnerships with government entities, businesses, NGOs, and international organizations, the initiative creates a united front against food waste, maximizing impact through shared resources and expertise. The roadmap will serve as a collective effort to reduce food waste by creating new social norms, scaling best practices, and enabling policies across the entire food ecosystem, said Almheiri.

Mariam Almheiri’s Vision for a Sustainable Future

Minister Mariam Almheiri’s dedication to sustainable practices and visionary leadership are evident in the Ne’Ma initiative. Her commitment to steering the UAE toward a more sustainable and resilient future is reflected in the comprehensive and forward-thinking approach of the roadmap.

“The importance of addressing food loss and waste is a strategic imperative for the world,” explained HE Almheiri.

According to Almheiri, who earlier this year unveiled the Food Systems and Agricultural Agenda, an ambitious plan to transform global food systems and ensure their long-term sustainability, the UAE is putting food and agricultural systems transformation as important topic.

The UAE hopes to advance production, consumption, food loss, and waste by bringing together companies, farmers, producer organizations, and other non-state actors through this Agenda.

Almheiri gave a detailed explanation of the new plan of action to reduce food loss and waste, stating that cinema is a powerful illustration of our leadership’s dedication to fostering social responsibility and sustainable practices across the country.

Impact on the UAE’s Food Landscape

The Ne’Ma initiative is poised to usher in transformative change within the UAE’s food landscape. By addressing food waste comprehensively, the roadmap not only contributes to global efforts to combat climate change but also reinforces the UAE’s commitment to becoming a global hub for sustainability and innovation.

Example Initiatives under Ne’Ma

One notable initiative under Ne’Ma involves leveraging technology to create a real-time tracking system for perishable goods. This ensures that food products are efficiently transported, reducing the likelihood of spoilage. Additionally, partnerships with local communities and businesses aim to redirect surplus food to those in need, aligning with the UAE’s commitment to fostering social responsibility.

A display of Zero Food to Landfill was also displayed, highlighting how all food will be separated, reused, or repurposed and given back to nature. To encourage participants to cut down on food loss and waste, Nema’s ‘Food is Blessing’ leftover bags were distributed.

Conclusion: UAE’s Bold Step Towards Sustainability

Mariam Almheiri’s Ne’Ma Food Loss and Waste Reduction Roadmap signals a transformative era for the UAE’s approach to food sustainability. As the nation commits to reducing food waste by half by 2030, the Ne’Ma initiative stands as a testament to the UAE’s dedication to fostering a sustainable and resilient future for generations to come. Through innovative strategies, technological integration, and public engagement, the UAE is positioned to lead by example on the global stage in the fight against food waste.
