Launched in 2017, the UAE Food Bank operates under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives. It has set a precedent in managing surplus food through a comprehensive ecosystem involving local authorities, international charities, and the food and hospitality sectors. The Food Bank’s operations include collecting, storing, packaging, and distributing excess fresh food from hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets to the underprivileged.
Expanding Reach
The Food Bank’s initiatives have been successful in not just local, but also global outreach. In 2023, it supported over 18.6 million people worldwide, surpassing its target of 12 million meals. This was achieved with the help of 800 donors and the engagement of more than 9,000 volunteers.
Environmental Contributions
In line with its mission, the UAE Food Bank has made a significant environmental impact by diverting 6,000 tonnes of food from landfills, contributing to a reduction in pollution and emissions associated with food waste2. The organization aims to reduce food waste by 30% by 2027, further solidifying its commitment to environmental stewardship.
Volunteer Programs and Community Engagement
The Food Bank has implemented numerous awareness programs and training for volunteers. In 2023, it organized 105 awareness programs, engaging nearly 9,843 participants and involving 1,800 volunteers.
