Elon Musk could ban Apple devices at his companies over ChatGPT integration in iOS18

Apple introduced iOS18 in a major release at its ongoing online conference in Cupertino (WWDC 2024) on Monday. The update promises more customisation options, the biggest redesign ever of the Photos app, Messages over satellite, Apple Intelligence, and more.

But billionaire Elon Musk seems to be mighty upset over ChatGPT integration in iOS18. Starting later this year, iPhone, iPad and Mac users can access the chatbot for free within iOS18, iPadOS18 and macOS Sequoia, eliminating the need for a separate account.

In a series of posts on social media platform X, Musk termed the partnership as an “unacceptable security violation”, even threatening to ban the use of Apple devices at his companies, such as Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink and X.

Is ChatGPT integration in iOS18 “absurd”?

Musk highlighted that “if Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level … visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.” In a separate post, he called the partnership between Apple and ChatGPT maker OpenAI “absurd”.

From the details shared by Apple at its Cupertino event, Apple device users have complete control over using ChatGPT in iOS18. They can opt-in to Siri utilising the chatbot for assistance, making it similar to downloading the standalone app, only more streamlined.
