Dubai’s public transport system will receive a significant upgrade thanks to 637 new buses being rolled out by 2026. The initial rollout will include electric buses as the Roads and Transport Authority plans to trial its first electric bus. This program is part of the RTA’s larger strategic aims to improve public transport and facilitate the adoption of greener technologies. The electric bus pilot will enable the RTA to evaluate the feasibility of implementing battery-powered vehicles at greater capacity, as well as evaluating providing electric transport resources between areas of the city. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the intention is to constructively support sustainability and better meet the growing demand for transport in the city. The introduction of Dubai’s bus fleet will include the latest designs that are made for comfort, safety, and accessibility.
The buses will be made available for urban and inter-city journeys, targeting areas of high demand, but also working to improve access to newly developed areas. It will also further support Dubai’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Dubai RTA operates 1,400 buses, all meeting European standards on emissions. Together with new buses and plans for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, carbon emissions are likely to be vastly reduced.
This significant investment enhances Dubai’s reputation as a smart, sustainable city that features an efficient transport hub. Specifically, the electric truck will propel the development of clean mobility in the emirate.
