During a period of increased regional tensions due to the Gaza conflict, His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan made a major diplomatic move by starting a tour of the countries that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This well-timed diplomatic approach highlights how important Jordan is to mending rifts and promoting harmony among Arab nations.
Resurgent violence in the Gaza Strip, a long-standing flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, resulted in a humanitarian crisis. Given these developments, King Abdullah’s visit to the GCC countries is of great geopolitical significance.
During a regional tour that included Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, King Abdullah II of Jordan spoke about the role that the international community should play in advocating for an immediate cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war.
The Jordan News Agency said that on Wednesday, King Abdullah met with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, in the capital city of Doha.
Qatar: Aiming for Regional Stability
The first leg of King Abdullah’s tour brought him to Qatar, a nation known for its diplomatic efforts and role in mediating conflicts. Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and King Abdullah discussed regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. Qatar’s diplomatic initiatives have often sought to maintain stability in the region, and King Abdullah’s visit to Doha reinforces the importance of multilateral diplomacy in addressing regional crises.
During the conversation, Abdullah emphasized that “a military or a security solution will not succeed in resolving the Palestinian issue and that what is needed is a political solution to reach a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.”
In addition, he “warned against the expansion of the cycle of violence into the region” and restated Jordan’s opposition to any efforts to internally uproot Palestinians from Gaza or to force them to relocate there.
According to the Jordan News Agency, the two leaders also emphasized the significance of preserving coordination and consultation between the two nations in light of the swiftly unfolding events, as well as safeguarding civilians and permitting the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Bahrain: Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The King’s next stop was Bahrain, where he held discussions with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The visit underscored the strong bilateral relations between Jordan and Bahrain and emphasized the collective commitment to regional stability. Bahrain has shown unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, and the talks between the two leaders aimed at finding common ground and shared solutions amid the Gaza unrest.
While in Bahrain, King Abdullah met with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, highlighting “the importance of enabling the work of international humanitarian organizations there to proceed without impediments” and issuing a warning regarding the ongoing deterioration of the situation in Gaza.
In addition to “finding a political horizon to reach a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace” based on the two-state solution, the two leaders called for “stepping up regional and international diplomatic efforts, preventing the forced displacement of Gazans and stopping the escalation.”
UAE: Promoting Unity
King Abdullah met with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan while in the United Arab Emirates. They talked about improving bilateral relations in several areas as well as the continuous escalation in the region. The UAE has played a vital role in humanitarian aid efforts, and discussions likely touched upon strategies to alleviate the suffering in Gaza
They “expressed keenness on enhancing joint action to reach regional peace based on the two countries’ deep-rooted support for coexistence and regional cooperation in service of all peoples.”
In terms of bilateral ties, the two leaders addressed “areas of development cooperation, especially in the sectors of the economy, investment, industry, and food security, among other vital sectors that serve the strategic priorities of the two countries towards sustainable development and prosperity.”
They were also in agreement that the “projects announced during the visit represent a quantum leap in the ambitious development partnership between the UAE and Jordan.”
To sum up, King Abdullah’s tour of the GCC countries amid the Gaza unrest highlights the critical role Jordan plays in promoting harmony and collaboration among GCC nations. This diplomatic approach is evidence of our shared dedication to the Palestinian cause and regional stability. It also offers hope for a peaceful end to the current Gaza conflict and reiterates the value of multilateral diplomacy in resolving complicated regional crises.
