Abu Dhabi has been rated as the first in the World Marine Sustainability Index for 2024 as the first world city to elicit a score greater than 97.0 percent.  The score indicates the emirate’s prime commitment to sustainably being accountable for fish stocks and marine wildlife.

Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mariam Almheiri, during the International Conference on Fisheries Sustainability, hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO, in Rome, announced the ranking. The ranking honored Abu Dhabi’s forward-thinking regulations and scientific monitoring systems and acknowledged the emirate’s indications towards responsible fishing practices.

Some actions that have supported the UAE’s ranking include measures such as a seasonal ban on overfished species, licensing systems, and educational programs for fishing actors. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) said it is important to realize the UAE’s planned journey as part of its Year of Sustainability.

The ranking endorsed 12 key performance indicators namely fish stock information, health, governance, and enforcement. Abu Dhabi’s model is a global model, especially concerning areas around the world re-establishing the balance between fishing activity and environmental conservation.

This global recognition reminds us of the UAE leadership in sustaining environmental priorities, ultimately allowing future generations to enjoy healthy marine ecosystems.
