Abu Dhabi announced a new flexible work plan to help those employees who have elderly parents requiring care. The plan was introduced by the Department of Government Support and Ma’an and allows for some employees of Abu Dhabi Government entities to adjust or reduce their work responsibilities and /or hours through hybrid work arrangements to better accommodate their responsibilities related to caring for elderly parents.
The initiative supports both work-life balance, as well as the well-being of families. The flexible work policy is mostly aimed at individual Emirati Government employees who are caregiving to elderly parents and in need of daily care and attention. The purpose of the new plan is to relieve some of the caregiving responsibilities and not hinder the work and services provided by employees.
The new flexible work plan is a part of the “Maan for Social Impact” plan which promotes an interest in a supportive and inclusive work environment to support the load faced by employees that are caregiving. The intention is to establish a more compassionate work culture by recognizing the challenges caring for aging parents faces, both as a worker and as an individual.
The initiative recognizes long-term goals for the UAE overall – lessening but not eliminating, stress of daily obligations to keep families strong, and prioritizing employee mental health. Overall, this initiative also sends a significant message to families in Abu Dhabi – work flexibility can also mean family flexibility and support. To summarize, this new policy is in alignment with the growing trend to focus on kindness, care and procedural or practical support to employees with job duties and familial obligations in their own lives.
