Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) recently clarified the regulatory framework for micromobility vehicles to ensure pedestrian safety and efficient urban flow. With the growth of the green infrastructure in the capital, the residents should be able to differentiate between the authorized avenues and restricted areas. Effective February 2026, the authorities have designated specific corridors for electric transport users to navigate the city safely. The guidelines classify permitted areas depending on the speed limits on the road and availability of a track. These limits are critical in helping to prevent huge penalties and to have a peaceful ride with the motor traffic. The compliance is also a priority because the emirate is encouraging sustainable options to the daily connectivity and carbon footprints.
Designated lanes for micromobility vehicles
The safest routes for micromobility vehicles remain the dedicated cycling tracks and shared paths marked by the Department of Municipalities and Transport. These routes are well connected to large intersections, such as the Corniche and the Yas Island, where one can travel without the risks of being caught in traffic jams. It is recommended that the users use these networks whenever possible to ensure optimum level of safety.
Safe usage of electric transport on internal roads
In residential sectors lacking specific tracks, electric transport is permitted on internal roads where the speed limit is 40 km/h or less. The riders should remain in the right side of the lane and also should move through the same direction as other traffic. Wearing helmets and reflective attires are also required, particularly at night time so that other motorists can see them.
Prohibited areas for low-speed mobility
Conversely, low-speed mobility is strictly forbidden on highways, main roads with limits exceeding 60 km/h, and pedestrian-only sidewalks. Scooters with seats are also banned at the moment in the emirate. Breaking such spatial laws may attract a fine between AED 200 and AED 500. The riders are playing a part in achieving a vision of an integrated transit ecosystem in the city by observing these designated zones. for more news updates, visit our Gulf Independent News page.
