The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged an additional $15 million to UN Women over the next three years, reaffirming its commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls worldwide.

The announcement was made by Noura Al Kaabi, the UAE’s Minister of State, during a meeting with Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women.

Minister Al Kaabi emphasized that the partnership between the UAE and UN Women is crucial not only for promoting gender equality but also for addressing other shared priorities.

The UAE firmly believes in the meaningful participation and inclusion of women across society as essential for sustainable development and lasting peace.

The contribution will support various initiatives, including the Women, Peace and Security agenda and the role of women and girls in climate action leading up to COP28, the UN climate change conference.

It will also promote tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and countering extremism, particularly in light of a recent historic UN Security Council resolution on ‘Tolerance, Peace and Security,’ co-drafted by the UAE and the United Kingdom.

UN Women’s Executive Director, Sima Bahous, highlighted the longstanding partnership between the UAE and the organization, which has resulted in significant achievements such as the establishment of the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak WPS Training Initiative and the UN Women GCC Liaison Office in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE’s Ambassador to the UN, Lana Nusseibeh, emphasized the country’s close relationship with UN Women, serving as co-chairs of the Informal Expert Group on Women Peace and Security and as a member of the UN Women Executive Board.

In addition to financial support, the UAE has played an active role in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The country has previously served as the President of the UN Women Executive Board and is currently serving as a member from 2023 to 2025.

The UAE’s voluntary contributions to UN Women have surpassed $46 million, establishing it as one of the leading funders globally and the top contributor in the region.
