Cost of Living in the Gulf: Dubai vs Doha vs Riyadh vs Kuwait City, Where Your Salary Goes Furthest
A tax-free salary sounds wonderful, but the cost of living in the Gulf can quietly eat it up. Four cities attract most newcomers: Dubai, Doha, Riyadh and Kuwait City. Each offers a different lifestyle and a different price tag. Rent usually decides everything, so we start there.
Housing Is the Biggest Bill
Dubai has the widest range. A small studio in a busy area can cost far more than a larger flat in a quieter district. Rent is usually paid in a few cheques, and contracts are registered through the Ejari system, which protects tenants.
Riyadh is often cheaper for families who want space, and many Saudi rentals are now registered on the government’s Ejar platform. Doha sits in the middle, though good areas near the metro fill quickly. Kuwait City can be good value, but furnished flats and limited expat housing options push some prices up.
Dubai vs Doha: Daily Spending
For Dubai vs Doha comparisons, think about lifestyle first. Dubai tempts you with brunches, beach clubs and constant events. Doha is calmer, and many residents spend less on going out. Groceries are similar in both cities, but imported brands cost more everywhere.
Taxes also matter. The UAE charges 5 percent VAT and Saudi Arabia charges 15 percent, which you will notice on bills and shopping. Qatar and Kuwait do not currently charge VAT, though policies can change.
Getting Around and Paying Bills
Cars make life easier in all four cities, yet petrol is cheap compared with most countries. Dubai and Doha have clean metro systems that can save a lot of money. Riyadh is building its metro network, so many people still drive or use ride apps.
Electricity and water are mostly covered by landlords in some Kuwaiti and Saudi contracts, while Dubai tenants often pay their own utilities, including cooling in summer. Always ask what the rent includes.
Smart Habits Before You Move
- Compare total packages, not only salary. Housing, school and flight allowances matter.
- Visit the area at rush hour before signing a lease.
- Use local delivery apps such as Talabat and Careem to compare grocery prices.
- Keep savings in a local account, since many banks offer easy transfers home.
Every city rewards careful planning, and your best choice depends on family size, work location and the lifestyle you want.
