Dubai driving license test changes 2026

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a complete revamp of its driving license training and testing system to commence from May 13, 2026. The new framework aims to ‘future-proof’ drivers for the increasing prevalence of smart cars, autonomous mobility and technology that uses artificial intelligence in the UAE roads.

The new rules will apply to both theoretical and practical driving tests of light vehicle applicants. Learner drivers are expected to know much more than manoeuvring, braking and road signs. The revised course aims to enhance Dubai’s dream of having one of the smartest and safest transportation ecosystems in the world, authorities said.

ADAS Technology Is Now Part of the Driving Test

The Roads and Transport Authority is bringing in one of its biggest changes with the compulsory addition of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Students now have to know safety features like Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring and Automatic Emergency Braking.

In practical assessments, examiners may assess learners’ response, when these systems are triggered. When a candidate panics, being oblivious to the warning or even over reacting to the steering input, it could lead to failure at poor vehicle control, immediately.

The purpose is to make it easier for drivers to drive present-day Smart Vehicles, instead of keeping to traditional driving practices.

Dubai Officially Lowers Driving Age to 17

Dubai has now fully implemented the reduced minimum age to drive in the UAE Federal Traffic Law with effect from the 8th Amendment of the Traffic Law.

One of the biggest changes in the UAE driving laws in recent years, is that it has become possible to get a Category B driving license for the 17-year olds.

But the authorities have tightened up monitoring younger drivers in their first year of driving. When the restriction is in effect, the driver’s license may be suspended upon violation of any serious traffic law.

AI-Powered Theory Tests Get Smarter in 2026

The theory question bank contains over 1,500 modern questions designed to address urban mobility issues including e-scooters, delivery riders, intersection management by AI, traffic behaviour, etc.

Emphasis is now being put on Hazard Perception and Decision-Making rather than pure memorization of the skills. The refreshed tests account for the Dubai of today, with roads becoming more crowded with smart mobility options and micro-transport.

The “Silent” Eye Test Integration

The other major update is to the Medical Verification and Eye Testing Process. Eye test records are now fully digitized and are now automatically loaded to RTA systems by the approved Optical centres as of May 2026.

Paper reporting of learners is no longer possible. Candidates will not be permitted to book an end of syllabus road-check exam if it is not recognised as a valid eye test from the last 30 days.

The transfer aims to, among other things, reduce fraud, simplify approval and develop a more integrated and unified digital licensing ecosystem.

Smart Yard 2.0

This year in Dubai, the system of automatic monitoring, Smart Yard got a major software upgrade as well.

The now AI-driven yard is now capable of measuring the accuracy of initial parking and distance to any obstacle with millimeter precision. Candidates should/will safely apply modern systems of the car to the manoeuvres (Parking Assist).

All of the functions are completely automated, without the need for a human examiner inside the vehicle. Sensors & AI systems give assessment of how quickly the company driver brakes in emergencies, whether they park well or clear around obstacles, and instantaneously present the pass/fail judgment.

What Learners Should Do Before Their Test?

Driving experts suggest that students learn driving through the use of newer model cars with smart safety features, prior to taking the RTA exam.

In the actual test, older cars equipped with collision warning, lane assist, and automation functions for parking may not correspond to what a learner has experienced in training, causing them to feel uneasy during the various sections of the test.

The following steps are also recommended to implement the eye test being digitally updated before attempting to book Practical Exams.

It is also crucial for younger drivers to be aware of the severe black point penalties in Dubai. Those getting their drivers’ license for the first time could lose it after having 12 points within a year’s time.
