The UAE is among the first countries to start responding to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, focusing on supporting important sectors and supplying humanitarian and medical aid by air, land and sea. The country’s total support has already reached $828 million.
It represents 42% of the total aid supplied since the beginning of the brutal Israel-Hamas fighting. The German press agency (dpa) recently reported that the UAE topped the list of countries offering the most support to the people of Gaza.
International officials from UN humanitarian organisations have praised the UAE for its generous support in alleviating the suffering and dire conditions faced by the people of the besieged Gaza Strip.
UAE’s comprehensive humanitarian support for Gaza
1. Food security funding
The UAE has already contributed more than $111 million to food security in Gaza. This support included meticulously prepared food aid campaigns such as the ‘Tarahum for Gaza‘ campaign, cargo and aid ships carrying essential items, and the use of air and sea logistics.
2. Healthcare funding
In order to support the already fragile healthcare sector in Gaza, the UAE has contributed at least $18 million, including funding medicine, medical supplies and ambulances. These efforts targeted enhancing healthcare access and treating urgent medical conditions.
On December 2, 2023, the UAE launched its field hospital in Gaza as part of Operation ‘Gallant Knight 3’. The hospital has a capacity of 200 beds and has already treated tens of thousands of patients. It has state-of-the-art surgical rooms.
3. Emergency sector funding
The UAE has already allocated close to $95 million to the emergency sector in Gaza. This includes relief shipments through different routes, transporting food, shelter materials, medical supplies and other essential items.
The Emirates Humanitarian City ensures a safe place for Palestinian families. The city is run by the UAE government departments and private sector partners. Services include support and coordination for the treatment of patients transported to the UAE.
4. Coordination, shipping and logistics funding
The UAE has dedicated nearly $25 million to logistics for Gaza. This funding accounts for coordination, shipping costs, and logistics operations, including flights and maritime transfers of essential relief supplies to the territory.
