International community cannot let people of Sudan become a political bargaining chip

The UAE has expressed deeper concerns over the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan. More than 25 million Sudanese citizens are affected by severe food insecurity. The Gulf state is alarmed over catastrophic hunger conditions in at least a dozen states.

It is imperative that the international community maintains its focus on Sudan. On Tuesday, the UAE affirmed that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan demands an emergency response that facilitates quicker delivery of aid and helps secure a ceasefire.

UAE calls on UNSC to utilise all tools at its disposal

Trucks full of lifesaving humanitarian aid are held on the border of Sudan, but scores of people starve across the country, including in Northern Darfur and Zamzam Camp. The UAE condemns the indiscriminate attacks that make it impossible for civilians to access help.

It is important that the Sudanese armed forces lift its restrictions on humanitarian access and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces ensure that organisations and aid personnel enter and operate safely in the country, facing no fear of attack.

The UAE calls on the UN Security Council to utilise all the tools at its disposal to bring an end to the catastrophic situation in Sudan. The Council’s decisive action can be crucial in coordinating international efforts to bring in the aid necessary to tackle the famine.

Pressing need to prioritise human life over military goals

The UAE is a committed humanitarian partner in Sudan. The Gulf state has allocated $70 million to address the urgent humanitarian needs of Sudanese people and $30 million to regional countries to support Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries of Sudan.

Once again, the UAE has reiterated its call on the Sudanese parties fighting each other to agree to an immediate and permanent ceasefire, facilitate unhindered, safe, rapid and sustained passage of humanitarian assistance, and prioritise human life over military goals.
