The United States, in partnership with Qatar, has launched a new air-defense coordination cell at Al Udeid Air Base to bolster regional missile defense capabilities. This facility announced by US Central Command (CENTCOM) on January 12, 2026, is a response to rising tensions with Iran and is based on 17 countries. It was described as a tremendous leap in air and missile defense, which was hailed by Admiral Brad Cooper, as the US prepared to possibly strike Iran amid reports of mass killings in the country due to mass protests. Al Udeid, the US base in the Middle East, was in the past attacked by Iran in June 2025 following the US interference in the Iranian nuclear facilities. The purpose of the move is to strengthen a Middle East NATO system even after recent friction caused by the Doha operations of Israel. The strategic position of Qatar makes it a major hub in the US early warning systems.
