The UAE has noted substantial success in the field of gender balance as it advances to the 7th rank globally and first regionally in the Gender Inequality Index 2024, issued by the UN Development Programme, rising from its 49th place in 2015 and 11th in 2022.
The UNDP made the announcement during the meetings of the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, being held at the UN headquarters in New York from March 11 to 22. The UAE Gender Balance Council is participating in the event.
The session is organised under the slogan, “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
Gender Inequality Index reflects UAE leadership’s vision
The ongoing event is an important platform to bolster global partnerships. It has highlighted the UAE’s notable successes in gender balance, social and economic empowerment of women, and meticulous efforts to achieve sustainable development goals globally.
The Gender Inequality Index results reflect the Emirati leadership’s vision and political determination and commitment to advancing development, progress and social and economic prosperity. The Gulf state has become an inspiring global model for gender balance.
Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council (UAE GBC), noted the leadership’s eagerness to enhance women’s representation across political, economic and social fields through promising legislation and initiatives.
She stressed that the strong partnership between all state departments and the cooperation of the private sector have substantially helped, adding that improving the UAE’s ranking in global indicators strengthens its position as a global and regional model for gender equality.
Key role played by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak
The GCC nation’s strong commitment to empowering Emirati women and giving them extensive opportunities to excel have propelled them to influential roles across pivotal sectors, making them key decision-makers, Sheikha Manal further noted.
