The UAE, Ethiopia, the African Union (AU), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) recently held a “High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan” in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, the President of Kenya, the UN Secretary-General, the Chairperson of AU Commission and representatives of IGAD attended the humanitarian conference, alongside regional and international countries and key organisations.
Sudan conference as Ramadan 2025 approaches
The recent humanitarian conference sought to mobilise regional and global support to address Sudan’s catastrophic crisis and present a strong unified call for a humanitarian ceasefire as the holy month of Ramadan approaches.
HE Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, noted in a statement that the conference for Sudan is going to serve as a catalyst for future conferences that are scheduled to assist the Sudanese people in crisis.
More importantly, His Excellency highlighted that there is no “veto” on humanitarian access and called on the international community to intensify its efforts to ensure that relief supplies are reaching those in need across the globe.
UAE’s steadfast commitment to helping people of Sudan
The UAE continues to be one of the leading countries to provide humanitarian aid to Sudan. Since the beginning of the recent conflict, the Gulf state has already contributed $600.4 million to alleviate the sufferings of the brotherly Sudanese people.
HE Sheikh Shakhboot reaffirmed the UAE’s steadfast position in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan and addressing the serious humanitarian crisis raging there for more than a year. The UAE has provided $3.5 billion in aid to Sudan over the past decade.
