The UAE facilitated another Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange just recently, taking the total number of prisoners exchanged since the conflict started to 2,883. The latest efforts resulted in the release of 150 Russians and 150 Ukrainians.
The UAE Foreign Ministry has expressed its appreciation to both Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation. It is the 12th successful mediation by the Gulf state since the beginning of last year. It brings the UAE’s diplomatic efforts into the limelight.
The Ministry also stressed that it is going to continue to support all diplomatic campaigns to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, in addition to helping mitigating the humanitarian effects of the crisis.
Russia’s Defence Ministry noted that it exchanged 150 captured Ukrainian prisoners for the return of 150 Russians held in the neighbouring country. Russian troops are undergoing medical checks in allied Belarus before returning home.
Generosity and compassion are at the heart of UAE culture. The series of Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchanges facilitated by the Gulf state in the past months clearly demonstrate the UAE’s commitment to assisting people in need.
In a gesture of solidarity, the UAE dispatched a plane carrying 50 tonnes of food supplies to Ukraine in March last year. The country has also initiated a $100 million donation to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
