The United Arab Emirates is not only looking toward the future, but it is also creating it. From smart cities to space missions, the UAE is already at the leading edge of development. It is now doing the same regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). A new agreement with the United States indicates that the UAE is not just a player in AI leadership, it is going to become a global superpower in AI.

Major AI Agreement between UAE and US

Emirati tech group G42 will partner with US companies to develop an enormous AI-related data center in the capital of Abu Dhabi. The AI campus will be powered with 5 gigawatts of energy and be able to support millions of advanced chips. There is an expectation that OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, will have a significant influence on the deal. The ultimate goal is for Abu Dhabi to become one of the leading AI centers in the world.

UAE’s Smart Strategy: G42 Takes the Lead

This is not G42’s first appearance in the news cycle. G42, an Abu Dhabi-based AI and cloud player, has already worked on significant AI initiatives across health, energy, genomics, and smart government services. One of the largest steps was when G42 partnered with Microsoft for $1.5 billion.

More Than Machines: UAE Invests in People

The UAE has recognized that AI is not just about machines; it is about people. For this reason, in addition to data centers and partnerships, they are developing the local talent with AI and cloud computing skills, backing universities and research institutions like MBZUAI (the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence), and bringing AI to schools, the government, health care, and traffic control. From smart hospitals to extending AI to farmers for more efficient water use, the UAE is making AI relevant and useful, blurring the line between AI and people, and making use of AI relevant for everyone.

Means for the UAE—and the World

With these moments, the UAE is firmly positioned as a serious player in the AI global race. Major world powers like the US are now willing for the UAE to manage and deploy powerful AI tools. And with the potential of OpenAI expanding operations into Abu Dhabi, that collaboration would attract more global technology companies to the UAE.

G42 and Microsoft: A Game-Changing Alliance

  • Microsoft Azure will provide G42’s AI systems.
  • There is a public fund of $ 1 billion to train homegrown AI talent.
  • Jais, an Arabic AI model, was incorporated into Azure’s AI capabilities.
  • Data will remain in-country in secure cloud solutions.
