People in the UAE are looking out for a special star, Suhail. It will soon appear in the sky, signaling to people that the hottest part of summer has come to an end. Though it will still be warm, this star tells them that with every passing day, cooler days are coming.
When Will We See Suhail?
According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, an expert on stars, we will see Suhail in the early morning of August 24. That is less than two weeks away! When this star appears, everybody understands that the weather starts to change.
What Happens After Suhail Appears?
In finally seeing Suhail, about 40 days of transitional weather are shown; sometimes it felt like summer, and at other times it would give a cooler vibe. This period is known as ‘Sufriya’. It’s a link between the very hot summer and the nicer, cooler weather that is coming.
When Will It Really Feel Cooler?
It’s only around mid-October that things will really steady down and cool off. At that time, we will begin something we call ‘Wasm.’ The real winter weather arrives some 100 days after we first see Suhail.
Suhail Brings Changes in the Air
With the appearance of Suhail, changes in the air also come. Warm, wet air from India, called the monsoon, starts to go away. New winds, called ‘Kous, bring more wetness into the air. Such winds can create small clouds, which may give a light rain, especially near mountains.
Why Suhail is Special to Arab People
The Suhail star has been well-known to the Arab people for years. It is popularly referred to as the ‘Star of Yemen’. It forms part of an ancient system of tracking time in a calendar called the ‘Durur’. This particular calendar basically divides the year into distinct 100-day portions.
