The New 12 AM Rule: How Sharjah’s New Parking Law Grants 2 Extra Hours of Free Daily Access
A significant shift will soon take place in the Sharjah Roads and Services authority’s Parking Laws. Public parking hours will be increased until midnight, combining a parking system throughout much of Sharjah from malls, residential areas and business centers from July 1, 2026.
It affects more than 124,000 paid parking spaces throughout Sharjah City, Kalba, Khorfakkan and Al Dhaid. The added time means longer periods of paid parking for many drivers but a big bonus to residents with a parking subscription of two extra hours of free parking each day.
What Is Changing on July 1?
In the next 18 months, standard paid parking hours will be in effect daily between 8:00 AM and 12:00 AM (midnight).
This was a prior practice where parking fees stopped earlier in the evening in some areas. The municipality has now unified it, for ease of understanding and to ensure a consistent experience when parking all across the emirate.
Designed to increase parking numbers, increase vehicle turnover and reduce the demand at peak evening periods.
Yellow Zones and Blue Zones Will Follow the Same Rules
The most significant of these changes is that Sharjah’s yellow-sign parking zones will be replaced.
In the past, yellow signs would have shorter paid parking periods than blue signs. The zone classifications will be combined on July 1 to reduce the confusion drivers faced when it came to managing parking.
The city, however, has indicated that there are some smart parking spots and niche areas which may function independently of the others with different rates and regulations.
Big Win for Parking Subscribers
Others may see an increase in parking time they can afford, but others are getting the benefits, such as seasonal parking.
The parking schedule has been extended, and for the time being, subscription fees will stay the same, according to Sharjah Municipality. Rather than cost the extra dollars, the authorities are expanding their park hands’ parking coverage.
Subscription holders will have an additional 2 hours exemption a day. This way, subscribers get two more hours of parking for no additional charge.
Friday and Public Holiday Exemptions Remain
The municipality has retained existing free parking concessions. On Fridays and official public holidays, public parking in Sharjah will remain free of charge everywhere. This is still a key and vital type of cover to have for both residents and visitors.
But motorists should keep an eye out for signage in the area. Some busy commercial properties might still require fees for parking on Friday and weekends including Sundays and public holidays.
Why Did Sharjah Extend Parking Hours?
The Public Parking Department announced the ruling is the result of extensive studies of parking behavior, traffic flow and customer feedback.
The number of vehicles that world class Sharjah has has grown as the city continues to expand and become a popular spot for families to live, businesses to be based and tourists to spend their evenings. There are high levels of congestion in many commercial areas after the traditional working time.
The plan is to try to discourage the long-term parking of valuable spaces and allow for easier parking for those who park through the evening, for restaurant visitors and for residents who want space until midnight.
What Drivers Need to Know?
The new parking schedule is set for July 1, so start planning ahead, motorists. Regular parkers in commercial areas on weeknights might need to plan for a longer period of paying parking.
Those on a subscription should check their parking availability to best take advantage of the new 16-hour coverage per day.
The new system will mean an increased convenience to most residents of being able to get on/off the bus without the fear of getting any cheaper than before, combined with the increased park spaces.
