Saudi, British Defense Ministers Hold Talks on Regional Security
The Saudi Defense Minister conducted a high-level telephone consultation with UK Secretary of State for Defence Wes Streeting, discussing Saudi-Britain defense ties and developments in the region.
Riyadh and London have recently increased their defense cooperation and have a conversation today as security tensions are rising in the Middle East. Foreign Office spokesperson Nora Lynch says defense is a component of the UK’s long history with Saudi Arabia.

The two ministers talked about the long-standing defense ties between the two nations, noting the consultation had been an opportunity to exchange views on various issues of regional security.
This conversation is consistent with on-going coordination at ministerial level between both countries. In the first half of 2026, the Prince also had a meeting with Britain’s National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell in Jeddah during which Saudi-British relations and discussion regarding bilateral cooperation and coordination in addressing regional challenges was discussed.
Regional Security Takes Center Stage
Saudi UK security talks continue to include regional developments. The Consultation was held amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf involving security, navigation of maritime routes and regional stability in general.
The UK recently stepped up the level of security support to Saudi Arabia after resurgence in hostile activity from the Houthis. On 22 September, Saudi Arabia announced offensive-air-support measures by the RAF, offering an air-to-air refuelling aircraft ‘Voyager’, to its Saudi counterparts.
The United Kingdom has also noted the need to ensure sea security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab. The situation is a “concern for regional stability, energy security and freedom of navigation,” a September 22 statement by the G7 signatories, which includes Britain.
Wes Streeting’s Defense Role?
A place on the government bench finally fell to Streeting, who took over as UK Secretary of State for Defence on July 20, 2026. His areas of responsibility include the strategic defence policy, operational supervision, defence relations and planning with international actors.
His meeting by the same token takes place as Britain is tasked to continue lock-step coordination with Gulf partners over defense and security issues.
What the Talks Mean?
The consultation highlights the continuing importance of the direct communication between the Ministers with regard to Saudi-UK defence relations. Though it discussed continued coordination of the operation, no new military operation was said to be being announced nor was an agreement on defense made public in the information available.
