Qatar's Sustainable Value Creation

According to the most recent Global Sustainable Competitiveness Report index, Qatar is first in the Middle East and sixth globally for sustainable value creation. This ranking has implications for how Qatar established its overall ranking and transition from removing natural resources to focusing mainly on long-term developments at every level of the economy and society.

Sustainable value creation is defined as each country’s capacity to create perennial economic growth while considering social welfare engagement and environmental protection. Qatar’s position as the leader of sustainable value creation within the region mainly stems from its commitment to finance clean energy technologies, invest in smart and efficient infrastructure, and focus on green finance.

The launch of sustainable and responsible initiatives such as Msheireb Downtown Doha; the introduction of green bonds with clearly identified uses of proceeds; and the construction of carbon capture and blue ammonia facilities position Qatar as the driver of sustainable practices and impact. All of these initiatives align with, and are influenced by, Qatar National Vision 2030, and Qatar’s commitments to economic diversification and climate action.

By focusing on sustainability in finance, construction, and policies, Qatar is embracing innovation-driven, and now low-emissions-based growth rather than oil dependency. Not only does this benefit Qatar’s image globally but it also sets a strong example for other Gulf nations.

With a long-term strategy now in place, Qatar will continue to balance short-term economic objectives with long-term environmental and social ambitions – all of which earn it the right to be one of the best sustainability countries.
