qatar launches updated open data portal

The Qatar National Statistics Center, an agency of the National Planning Council, officially acquired and upgraded the Qatar Open Data Portal in the context of the NPC’s continued national effort to establish enhanced national governance of data. The announcement regarding the acquisition of this upgraded platform was made via a brief forum hosted on June 26, and the title of that forum was “Toward Integrated National Data Governance.” During the forum, NPC Secretary-General Dr. Abdulaziz bin Nasser Al Khalifa announced the acquisition of an upgraded version of the Qatar Open Data Portal, which now hosts and maintains more than 1,100 datasets grouped across several key areas. The acquisition and maintenance of the Open Data Portal will support Qatar in achieving its priorities within the National Development Strategy, as the objectives of this Open Data Portal are to facilitate national growth, innovation, and transparency, which these spurred by a broader National Data and Statistics Strategy.

The forum saw the inclusion of information technology, planning, and quality teams from a variety of ministries; talk of collaboration, responsibilities related to data governance, and the introduction of tools being made available under the National Data Governance Program were the main themes for discussion; had this modern information technology infrastructure not been made available – these abilities would not have existed. The presentation included a thoughtful outline and explanation of the technical architecture behind the Open Data Portal, effectively emphasizing how and why this implementation should increase public trust and have an overall impact on informed decisions. The Open Data Portal is meant to complement a more challenging endeavor – building a more comprehensive and integrated national, open data ecosystem in Qatar. Guidance should be provided by various international standards, such as Open Data and Open Knowledge Principles as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
