Preparations for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar have begun with an awe-inspiring draw ceremony, which featured a display of technological marvels and an exhibition of organisational ability.

The President of FIBA, SHEIKH Saud bin Ali Al-Thani, was upbeat about the tournament providing a unique and special experience to basketball fans worldwide. The draw ceremony, attended by HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, is a testament to Qatar’s commitment to taking international sporting events to another level.
“This World Cup shall be a precedent for the Gulf and other Arab countries,” Sheikh Saud said, also highlighting that it is historically the first time that such a big prestige event will be hosted in the region.

Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, QOC Second Vice-President, said that hosting all games in Doha was a first in the history of the tournament. He noted the modern infrastructure and integrated transportation network in Qatar allow the fans to experience the thrill of attending several matches in a day. The event attracted many sports legends: NBA Hall of Famer Anthony Carmelo gave accolades for Qatar’s strong cultural identity, Olympic champion Mutaz Barshim called the ceremony ‘breathtaking in every detail’, and former national basketball star Yaseen Ismail lauded the blend of modernity and technology.
