Kuwait Declares Thursday, August 27, Official Holiday for Prophet’s Birthday

The Council of Ministers in Kuwait have decided to make Thursday 27 August 2026 an official public holiday to celebrate the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, Mawlid Al-Nabawi. The holiday falls on 12 Rabi’ Al-Awwal 1448 AH of the Islamic calendar.

The decision covers the ministries, public authorities and state institutions in Kuwait. The announcement is a three-day holiday for public-sector workers, in addition to the regular Friday and Saturday weekend.

Three-Day Weekend for Government Employees

The government has declared Thursday to be a holiday and Friday and Saturday the regular weekend, meaning that government workers will be on an extended break from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29.

Government operations will resume as normal on Sunday August 30, 2026. People who have to visit government offices should thus consider the closure timeframe when organising official actions.

Essential Services Will Continue

While most government offices will be closed, there will not be a total shutdown of services that must continue. There will be special operating hours for emergency health care, security and other essential public services.

Staffing for essential operations will be determined by individual departments. Those who are in need of immediate services are therefore advised to check directly with the relevant authority about their services operating times during the holiday period.

This holiday is a long weekend for government workers and can also drive more demand for entertainment, dining, shopping, and travel within the country.

For businesses that are doing business with the government, there is a possibility that administrative procedures and official transactions will take longer if the business falls right before or during the holiday. Businesses should schedule submissions and appointments to fit the schedule.

Prophet Muhammad’s birth is celebrated on Mawlid Al-Nabawi by many Muslims. Kuwait’s official holiday is a day for public institutions and employees to celebrate the holiday while still ensuring the maintenance of necessary government services.

The Council of Ministers also congratulated the Amir, Crown Prince, citizens and residents of Kuwait on the occasion.
