The Special Olympics UAE has announced a new big sports event called the UAE Games. This event is for athletes who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. A press conference was held in Abu Dhabi to share this exciting news. More than 1,000 people are expected to take part in the UAE Games. This includes athletes with disabilities, students with disabilities, partners without disabilities who will compete alongside the athletes, coaches, staff, and supervisors.
There will be two main events in the UAE Games:
1. The Unified Schools UAE Games
– This event will have football (soccer) and badminton competitions
– Boys and girls of different ages will compete
– Around 400 students are expected to join on May 21 and 22
2. The UAE Games for Clubs and Centers for People with Determination
– This event will happen from June 7 to June 10
– There will be competitions in 6 sports: badminton, basketball, bowling, football (soccer), e-sports, and powerlifting
– More than 600 athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities from all over the UAE will take part
– Their coaches, staff, and supervisors will also attend
The UAE Games is a big new sports event that will allow many people with disabilities to compete and have fun!
Both of these main events will be hosted at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC Abu Dhabi).
Collaboration with Sports Authorities
The UAE Games is being organized in close collaboration with several sports federations and authorities, including the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Dubai Sports Council, and Sharjah Sports Council. This collaboration ensures that the event is organized and conducted according to the highest standards and best practices.
Legacy of Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019
According to His Excellency Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of Special Olympics UAE and Chairman of the UAE Games Organizing Committee, the inaugural UAE Games builds upon the enduring legacy of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. This event, held in 2019, was a significant milestone in promoting the empowerment and inclusion of people with determination (people with disabilities) in the UAE.
Providing a Platform for Athletes to Showcase Their Abilities
His Excellency Talal Al Hashemi emphasized the importance of providing a platform for athletes with developmental and intellectual challenges to demonstrate their abilities and compete in a positive and empowering environment. The UAE Games will allow these athletes to communicate, form friendships, and showcase their talents and skills in a supportive and inclusive setting.
Assessing Athletes and Planning for the Future
Additionally, the UAE Games will enable Special Olympics UAE to assess the abilities and performance of the participating athletes. The insights gained from this assessment will be invaluable for future planning and development of programs and events specifically tailored to the needs and aspirations of people with determination.
Collaboration with Clubs and Centers
Special Olympics UAE will collaborate closely with various clubs and centers for people with the determination to execute and organize the UAE Games. These clubs and centers include the Abu Dhabi Club for People of Determination, Al Ain Club for People of Determination, Dubai Club for People of Determination, Al Thiqa Club for the Disabled, Ajman Club for People of Determination, Ras Al Khaimah Club for People of Determination, Khor Fakkan Club for the Disabled, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, Dubai Centre for People of Determination, Fujairah Centre for People of Determination, and Dibba Centre for People of Determination.
Complementary Activities and Community Engagement
To maximize community engagement and participation, Special Olympics UAE and its partners will organize several complementary sports and health activities to coincide with the UAE Games. These activities will include athletes’ health screenings as part of the Special Olympics UAE’s Healthy Athletes Program, sponsored by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and delivered in partnership with Apollonia Dental Centre, Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), and Samaya Specialised Hospital.
