In a dramatic change of events, travellers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain shall soon no longer need a pre-entry visa to enter the UK. From February 1, citizens of the Gulf states can apply for the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme.
The scheme permits citizens of the six GCC countries, including Qatar as it has been able to use the ETA since November, and Jordan to travel to the UK for an unlimited number of times in a two-year period, according to the UAE Embassy in the UK.
The UK remains extremely popular among tourists from Gulf countries, with around 800,000 Gulf citizens entering the country in 2022. On average, the tourists spent $3,254 on their trips and also stayed longer, reaching 16 nights as opposed to the market average of 8.
ETA scheme replacing Electronic Visa Waivers (EVW)
Between January and June 2023, the UK recorded an estimated 411,000 visits from the GCC, contributing a staggering $1.2 billion to the British economy. Flight bookings also showed steady signs of recovery, reaching roughly 93% of pre-COVID levels.
According to official sources, citizens of the Gulf countries and Jordan shall need an ETA if they are planning to travel to the UK from February 22. The Electronic Travel Authorisations are replacing Electronic Visa Waivers (EVW).
ETAs are seen as a major improvement on the EVW, which the majority of Gulf nationals currently apply for. For starters, an ETA is a third of the price at $13 and also allows for unlimited visits over two years or until the holder’s passport expires.
“Speed, enhanced accessibility and affordability”
The scheme also means the visa requirement will be removed for short stays in the UK for nationals from the GCC and Jordan. At the time of applying for an ETA, applicants must provide biographic and biometric details, in addition to answering questions on suitability.
The UAE Embassy to the UK said: “The new process streamlines travel between the UAE and UK, offering speed, enhanced accessibility and affordability.” “The 1st of February 2024 marks the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the UAE and UK.”
The social media post further elaborated on how the scheme is “the result of four years of collaborative effort, and a symbol of our commitment to strengthening the already deep ties between the UAE and the UK.”
