Dubai is all set to step into the newer areas by having driverless taxi trials this year. The Roads and Transport Authority has been instrumental in collaborating with Uber and WeRide, a self-driving technology company, to allow autonomous taxi operations on the roads of Dubai. These trials fall under the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to have 25% of all transport in Dubai done autonomously by 2030.
Expect from the Driverless Taxis
The very initial days of the pilot project would see a handful of vehicles being let loose on the bustling city roads. Refuting the idea of being chauffeur-driven, these taxis use AI and sensors to quite confidently navigate their way through roads. Yet, in the initial phase, a safety driver would remain in control of the vehicle to intervene if needed. The trials will serve to test the system amidst real city traffic, collect data, and continue to enhance the system for broad deployment down the line.
Why This Matters for Dubai
It is not just the technology, it goes far beyond and has more to do with putting Dubai as a front runner of smart transport. Reducing traffic accidents and fossil fuel consumption, and then coming in with fast, convenient transport would radically change the movement of people around them.
city. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of RTA, said the move supports Dubai’s vision of becoming a benchmark in the application of AI and future mobility.
Uber and WeRide: Driving the Change
Uber will assist with ride-hailing service and app integration, while WeRide is adding self-driving technology. WeRide has previously conducted testing of autonomous vehicles in countries such as China, the US, and Singapore. This collaboration marries global experience with an emphasis on the smart city frameworks in Dubai.
