Traffic on Emirates Road (E611) between Dubai and Sharjah is set to change in a permanent overnight closure that is planned by the Roads and Transport Authority in Sharjah. The traffic rerouting is helping infrastructure works that are part of the Etihad Rail national network and will coincide with the Islamic New Year long weekend.
The closure will be temporary on Dubai-Sharjah road and is expected to impact commuters, logistics providers, travellers to and from the airport and is advised to be planned around to prevent delays.
10-Day Overnight Closure Schedule
This will cause the contaminated exit which leads to Emirates Road (E611) to Sharjah to be closed for 10 consecutive days starting from Saturday, 13 June 2026 until Monday, 22 June 2026.
The closure will be in effect every day between 1 and 6 am so that the construction crews can make infrastructure upgrades without worrying about safety. During the rest of the day, the exit will function as usual, and will cause only minimal disturbances.
Why Is the Road Being Closed?
The temporary shutdown is part of the infrastructure redevelopment that is connected to the Etihad Rail project, one of the UAE’s biggest transportation projects aimed at upgrading the country’s infrastructure and transportation connections.
Police have opted to consider the construction time of night and weekend to avoid disrupting commuters, but leave traffic moving during the busiest part of the day as the project continues.
Recommended Alternate Routes
Those who try to use roads from Dubai towards Sharjah in the closure period should consider other roads to avoid congestion.
1. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311)
Motorists on their way north could bypass the tolls and head right into Sharjah’s residential, commercial and industrial areas on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) which offers unlimited multi-lane access. This route will be able to accommodate most of the diverted traffic.
2. Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) and Al Khail Road (E44)
Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road, leading to Dubai Airport, are available options for those who are travelling from Dubai to coastal Dubai or to central Dubai, via Dubai Airport. The route avoids completely the affected Emirates Road exit.
3. Al-Mleiha Road Diversion
Drivers on approach to the work area on Emirates Road should prioritise temporary electronic signs that signal them to pass through existing tunnel bypasses and Al Suyoh network to link to Al-Mleiha Road.
Travel Tips for the Long Weekend
The closure coincides with the Islamic New Year day off, so there is likely to be more late-night traffic across Dubai and Sharjah.
Motorists should arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes before their regular travel time as well as watch electronic message boards and adhere to any signage on the temporary directional system as they approach the work zone.
There are further changes in the traffic that are ongoing as part of the Al Taawun Tunnel Project that drivers should be aware of. To reduce delays during travel, those passing through Al Nahda / Al Taawun are advised not to use the roundabout area and if possible, are encouraged to use other corridors.
