Dubai cancer care

Dubai is making a significant advancement in cancer care by launching the first proton‑beam therapy centre in the region. Proton therapy uses charged particles that provide improved targeting of tumours, and less damage to the healthy tissues surrounding the tumour than with conventional radiation. This is a welcome assurance for both the patient and the physician.

Proton therapy is well established globally for the treatment of difficult and sensitive tumours, particularly in the brain, spine, head and neck; lungs and prostate; and even in children. The quality of sparing surrounding organs while delivering higher doses to the cancer itself is critical to treating these patients. The precision of this technology and treatment provides unique opportunities for young patients and tumours located near substantive anatomy that must be considered concerning treatment.

Previously, many patients from the UAE were seeking treatment abroad, generally in India, Singapore; or Europe. They travelled abroad to receive advanced treatment at the most world-class standards in care. They spent a significant amount of money, and valuable time, to seek treatment, and engage with their families. It now means that patients will have access to the very best possible standards of care in the region and at their convenience. The establishment of this centre will also contribute to Dubai’s progression into a travel hub for smart quality health care in the Middle East and a new hope for cancer patients in the region.
