Cash Is Phased Out: How to Navigate Dubai’s 100% Cashless Street Parking System
Dubai is now in the era of smart-mobility. The Dubai Cashless Strategy aims to phase out the use of cash and coin on parking meters in the Emirate, and Parkin, the emirate’s dominant public parking provider is variously looking to complete the transition. This is one of the largest changes the motorists will experience in daily driving in years because they used to have loose change in their glove section for parking.
The move is aimed at making a more effective, quick and completely electronic parking program. Parking meters will still be used, however, no longer will drivers put in any coins to pay for parking. Instead, all parking transactions will now have to be done in accepted electronic payment methods.
Why Dubai Eliminated Cash Parking Payments?
The transformation contributes to Dubai’s aspiration for becoming one of the smartest cities in the world. The goal of conversion to a cashless system is a more efficient payment processing, fewer cash handling costs, and a better parking experience for all.
There’s also real-time tracking, automated extensions and improved integration with Dubai’s transport network when it comes to digital payments. Drivers can no longer walk back to the meter to add more time, but can use their hand-held devices to control time management on the parking session.
The changes also contribute to the sustainable goals, as they see a reduction in paper tickets and the use of smarter parking enforcement technologies.
How to Pay for Parking in Dubai Now?
Users can register for a Parkin Digital Wallet, load funds, initiate and extend parking sessions remotely. The app also notifies the driver beforehand if a session is about to expire, which prevents the refusal of drivers to pay fines where they are applicable.
Even drivers who prefer the old fashioned way of payment may utilize their Nol Card. Nol can still be used via parking meters using the tap-and-pay feature, which means people can pay by any electronic device without using their smartphones.
For those not avid at texting, SMS parking services are still available. You can submit a standard textual message containing the vehicle’s details and how long the vehicle had been parked to 7275. Stores of messaging service providers still have to pay an extra AED 0.30 SMS cost per transient.
Dubai Now and the RTA App continues to be two of the avenues for payment. Both government sites enable the motorist to pay their parking charge via payment of a linked debit or credit card.
Understanding Dubai’s New Parking Rates
The shift to cashless parking is coming in the wake of a significant reorganization of parking charges. Dubai now implements a Variable Tariff Policy, which modifies the parking charges in accordance with the location and peak demand times to attract more business.
Peak hours are defined as between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, and from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, during the weekdays. In Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, Jumeirah and other areas of Deira and Bur Dubai, premium zones that will rent for about AED 6.30/hr (plus VAT).
The cost of parking in standard residential/community lots is approximately AED 4.20 per hour at peak times. During off-peak hours, park for cheaper daily base rates, for flexible commuters.
Further, in all parking transactions a necessary 5% VAT charge is now applied, so this information is important for drivers to know before starting a parking session.
Increased park usage has come with the adoption of AI Cameras to eliminate traditional parking enforcement.
Should Frequent Drivers Consider a Seasonal Parking Card?
Parkin Seasonal Cards are available in various terms of validity such as 03-months, 06-months and serial card year cards. These plans eliminate parking costs per day, and can save you major cash if you typically park in the same areas.
VAT is also applicable to seasonal subscriptions, but the convenience of having a subscription to attend work and with a known cost really does outweigh the cost of paying hourly parking fees for those who are in need of an office-to-work car parking service.
Future of Parking in Dubai
The Dubai that’s everything cashless shows the Emirate’s continued efforts in the field of smart city innovation and shows it’s not a flash in the pan. Its integration of digital payments, AI enforcement and dynamic pricing is expected to enhance traffic flow while also providing a more user-friendly experience.
Motorists adapt easily to the new “ecosystem”. The key steps to avoiding parking fines and discontinuing parking services include having the Parkin App downloaded, linking a payment method, and understanding new parking rates.
With Dubai ever more committed to digitization of its urban infrastructure, cashless parking will soon be the norm for the city’s mobility services.
