The UAE capital is making progress in Smart transport. The autonomous taxi service has been expanded to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands – two of the most prominent districts in the capital, with busy commercial and residential sectors. The expansion comes as part of Abu Dhabi’s smart transport strategy based on the smart mobility framework helped by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) which operates under the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT). The expansion is a partnership between WeRide, Uber, and Tawasul Transport, the local mobility operator.
Half of Abu Dhabi Now Served
With these two islands now available, the autonomous taxi service is now in almost 50% of Abu Dhabi’s main zones. The original rollout with Uber had previously launched in routes like Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes around the Zayed International Airport.
The self-driving fleet launched on the Uber app back in December 2024, has already tripled the fleet size since the launch. The continued expansion is not only supported by passenger demand, but decreases traffic and emissions.

Vision for 2040: 25% Smart Mobility
The project aims to support Abu Dhabi’s ambition to have 25% of all trips be through smart transport solutions by 2040, and the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) is leading the movement to make Abu Dhabi a global destination for AI transport. According to Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli acting Director General at ITC, “We are shifting into more complex, higher traffic areas. This step is the next part of our commitment to providing safe and efficient and innovative mobility.”
