UAE Welcomes US Call for Sudan Peace Efforts and Immediate Humanitarian Truce in Sudan

The UAE has supported U.S. statements calling for renewed action to advance peace and justice in Sudan, including an immediate and unconditional humanitarian truce and broad-based political talks leading to a process of peaceful transition towards civilian rule.

UAE Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan reiterated the UAE’s support for international efforts to bring peace and alleviate the people of Sudan’s humanitarian situation.

The UAE’s position on the political front remains steadfast; the UAE continues to partner on a political solution with international and regional partners. There is a focus on the cease fire and a peaceful transition by civilians.

Sheikh Shakhboot Commends US Diplomatic Efforts

Sheikh Shakhboot applauded U.S. president Donald Trump for his leadership in efforts to avert Sudan’s further spiraling into extremism, fragmentation, and further worsening of the humanitarian crisis.

He also credited US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Dr. Massad Boulos, the US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, for their efforts in keeping the two sides from fighting, and working to bolster chances for a political settlement.

The UAE’s new demeanor in this regard, after ongoing diplomacy at the national and international levels in Sudan. Earlier in September, sheikh Shakhboot met Boulos in Washington where the two explored avenues of cooperation and regional and African developments in the fields of security, stability and peace.

Immediate Humanitarian Truce Remains a Priority

One of the pillars of the UAE’s stance will be calling for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian truce. This is supposed to allow room so that civilians may be provided with the necessary assistance until diplomatic initiatives have been worked out.

The UAE has repeatedly called for safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access to Sudan, as well as measures “to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian operations. In July the UAE also reiterated that the military solution does not exist for the conflict and called for an emergency humanitarian truce and a political process led by civilians.

UAE Calls for Wider UN Arms Embargo

Sheikh Shakhboot also asked for the current UN arms ban to be extended to cover all of Sudan.

The UAE called it a measure from a necessity to help defuse violence and enhance protection of civilians. It comes at a time when it has taken a broader stance that contends for the international community to prioritize a political road over perpetuating the violence.

Path Toward Civilian Government

The UAE’s remarks equate humanitarian aid with an overall political effort to pave the way for civilian rule.

Past UAE expressions also have supported a peaceful, internally driven and civilian-led transition that demonstrates Sudanese aspirations. The new reaction to Washington’s move is in line with this stance, and calls for continued international coordination to put an end to the conflict.
