How Can Oman Expats Download the New Indian e-OCI Card?

The Government of India has come a long way in digitizing service of the Overseas Citizens of India with the launching of an e-OCI card. The new system was officially rolled out by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 30th June 2026 and replaced several of the current systems, which involve handling of OCI paperwork, with a secure digital system.

The e-OCI card promises smoother travel, onboarding of foreign passports and reduced visits to application centres for thousands of Indians who are currently traveling on foreign passports in Oman. The Indian Embassy in Oman has, now confirmed that a few OCI holders are eligible to avail this enhanced digital service.

What Is the New e-OCI Card?

Digital Card (e-OCI) is the electronic version of OCI card, which grants foreign passport holders of Indian origin visa exemption facility for life in India.

The new e-OCI system is more secure, unlike the traditional, paper OCI booklet, and stores your information online and connects it to a unique registration number. The digital card, which can be downloaded, can be presented during travel using electronic means.

Why the e-OCI System Is a Major Upgrade?

A significant improvement of the new system is that it eliminates a number of existing administrative requirement functionalities. Until now, new passport OCI holders who get their empowering OCI cards before their 20s are required to apply for a new Physical OCI booklet with OCI.

This requirement has now been erased in the New Digital Framework. The e-OCI will stay associated with your lifetime registration number, and passport renewals are much easier.

How Oman Expats Can Download the e-OCI Card?

The new digital OCI card is easily downloaded and there will be no charge at all.

Option 1: OCI Services Portal

Any OCI holder can log onto the OCI Services Portal  with his existing account. After an identity is verified, users will be able to create and download their own electronic OCI card straight to their computer or cell phone.

Option 2: Indian Visa Su-Swagatam App

People can also access via the official Indian Visa Su-Swagatam mobile app offered by the Government of India. Once users login with the necessary credentials, they are able to securely access and store their e-OCI card in their mobile device to use it in travel scenarios in the future.

How to Update Passport Details Online?

The digital platform also makes passports easy to update. As long as the foreign passport is replaced with a new one upon receipt, and the OCI holder does not seek any replacement of the physical booklet, there is no need to apply for a replacement foreign passport.

Rather, the users log on to the OCI portal, upload updated passport details and then the new photograph and submit the online verification process. If the digital record is accepted, it is automatically updated.

Are Existing OCI Booklets Still Valid?

Existing physical OCI booklets will continue to be valid for travel & immigration. The existing OCI holders are being urged, however, to produce the free digital e-OCI version via the website or app. It’s also a plus to have access to both a photo and an app when traveling.

How will e-OCI Improve Travel?

India has taken a step by step approach in incorporating the new digital OCI database with Immigration Check Posts and major foreign airports. Most international entry points will be associated with a seamless electronic verification by the end of 2026.

With this option, travelers will only need to show their valid foreign passport in addition to the digital e-OCI card on their smartphone to pass immigration inspection, which will significantly reduce paperwork and quicken the immigration clearance process.
