Dubai motorists are now in a new era of parking with technology. In a move that signals. As part of Dubai’s broader transformation into a smarter city, RTA is closing all coin-operated parking meters across the emirate starting June 1, 2026.
The tradition of using orange parking machines that use loose dirham coins is being superseded by fully electronic machines, which are linked to vehicles’ number plates. The new framework will also mean that paper tickets on the dashboards will vanish altogether.
For those who haven’t used electronic payment for parking yet, it is one of the more substantial parking system changes ever made in Dubai in recent years.
Why Is Dubai Moving to a 100% Cashless Parking System?
The RTA states that the move will contribute to efficiency, alleviating parking issues and supporting Dubai’s long-term digital infrastructure plan. Removing human token counting and coin-checking means authorities can access an automated database that allows them to compare the number of vehicles in the lot with an instant link to vehicle registrations for an automated parking system to enforce parking regulations.
The move also will reduce the expenses with old style parking meters, presenting more flexibility for motorists to take charge of their parking remotely.
The new system eliminates the manual checking of paper parking tickets by parking inspectors. However, instead of historical parking recharges, all parking validations are digitally saved and verified real time with smart patrol systems.
Using the RTA Dubai App for Parking Payments
After June 1, the RTA Dubai App is projected to be the primary vehicle-to-vehicle parking solution for most motorists. Upon downloading the app and registering an account, users can register the plate of their vehicle and can save multiple payment methods securely.
The App accepts debit cards, credit cards, Apple pay and balances from RTA e-Wallet. One of its best features is to bring GPS-guided zone detect functionality which detects an area automatically and provides proper parking code accordingly.
Even drivers get reminders as they get close to the end of their parking time, so they can still continue to park sessions even though they are not in the vehicle.
How WhatsApp Parking Works in Dubai?
Since the announcement of the cashless switch in Dubai, one of the most discussed systems is the official WhatsApp parking system. This is offered via the trusted RTA WhatsApp channel and is broadcast in much the same manner as SMS parking.
Automotive drivers just send a text that includes their vehicle’s license plate, parking zone and time parked. Amongst the documents, one is the Parking document, which is generated once after submitting and the parking amount is deducted directly from the user’s balance on his Nol card.
One of WhatsApp Parking’s greatest benefits is that it does not incur an extra 30-fil telecom surcharge that is typically levied by SMS parking systems.
New Smart Touch Screen Parking Terminals
Dubai is also putting in place modern digital parking terminals in public parking zones for drivers who don’t like to use a mobile application. Such touch-screen systems are a full replacement for standard coin-operated meters.
The customers can enter their vehicle number, select the parking time, and pay using the contactless bank cards or Nol cards. No paper ticket will be issued after paying as the system will automatically update the parking database.
Digital receipts can be sent via an email direct link or by QR code scanning to users when they want a proof of payment for reimbursements or company records.
So even if the Dynamic ll access road is in use, the Traditional SMS parking option still exists.
Traditional SMS Parking Option Still Exists
SMS for the standard parking can still be sent by the existing registered mobile number of a driver. This however, differs from WhatsApp parking, as it also has the extra telecom service fee applied by the mobile operators themselves.
There is either a parking fee and service charge off prepayment or direct service charge on a monthly post payment without any parking fee.

Dubai drivers are encouraged to get ready for the changeover prior to its rollout. Motorists are recommended to update the RTA Dubai App, confirm vehicle information and make sure that their Nol cards are correctly linked to avoid disruptions in payments.
Frequent SMS users can also save on telecom costs in the long term by utilizing WhatsApp parking.
The transition will be ready by the end of 2016, after which coin payments and physical parking tickets will be discontinued throughout Dubai’s public parking system, authorities said.
