The ALPS Group – stands for aligned for advancing lifesaving and peace in Sudan – met virtually on September 19 to continue its coordination on expanding emergency humanitarian access across Sudan, including through advocating for humanitarian pauses.

The prominent coalition of countries has a deepening focus on facilitating protection for civilians and ensuring a broader cessation of hostilities. During the meeting, the group took note that the humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate.

Recent data from the Zamzam camp reflects catastrophic malnutrition. The coalition hailed the full opening of the Transitional Sovereign Council for the Kassala and Dongola airports for the UN humanitarian air service to execute humanitarian assistance flights.

Deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan

The brutal Sudan crisis has been raging on since early 2023, claiming scores of lives and exacerbating the humanitarian situation in the country. The conflict involves the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

In the statement released recently, the ALPS Group also noted that the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group should facilitate preparations to let humanitarian flights into and throughout Sudan by guaranteeing the security of aircraft and staff.

The coalition also appreciates that humanitarian operations are currently moving across conflict lines from Port of Sudan through Shendi to Khartoum. But this expansion of humanitarian access remains insufficient, they added.
