The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Tadweer Group have entered into a concession agreement with a Japan-based consortium comprising Marubeni Corporation, Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI), and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (JOIN). This strategic partnership aims to develop the world-leading greenfield Abu Dhabi Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Independent Power Project (IPP), setting a new benchmark for sustainable waste management and energy production.
Signing Ceremony Marks a Milestone
The concession agreement was officially signed at the Abu Dhabi Energy Centre by Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tadweer Group, and Roni Araiji, consortium representative and Managing Director of Middle East of Hitachi Zosen Inova Ltd. A Global Benchmark in Waste-to-Energy Technology
Touted as the world’s most advanced Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facility, and one of the largest in the region, the project will boast an impressive annual processing capacity of 900,000 tonnes of waste. This groundbreaking initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by a staggering 1.1 million tonnes per year, setting a new benchmark for WtE energy projects in terms of scale, efficiency, and environmental benefits.
UAE Takes a Leap Towards Sustainable Waste Management
Tadweer Group’s ambitious goal of diverting 80 percent of Abu Dhabi’s waste from landfills by 2030 will receive a significant boost from this world-leading project. By creating a blueprint for alternative energy sources, the WtE facility will play a pivotal role in shaping the emirate’s circular economy and sustainable future.
A Collaborative Effort Towards Decarbonization
Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, emphasized the project’s significance in accelerating the decarbonization and sustainable transformation of the UAE’s economy. He highlighted EWEC’s commitment to integrating sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources that cater to the community’s needs and drive the development of the UAE’s circular economy.
Promoting Environmental Sustainability through Innovation
