uae's space academy sparks new horizons, report

A specialized academy has been established by the UAE to assist the next generation of Emiratis in pursuing careers in the expanding space industry.

In an exclusive interview with sources, Sarah Al Amiri, the chairwoman of the UAE Space Agency and Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, stated that the country’s goals in the high-tech sector depended on the learning center.

“We use the space academy to build up [young people’s] capabilities and capacities from the beginning, and you also need to make sure you’re continuously engaging with the youth program when we start placing them into new areas of development,” the speaker explained.

The academy will provide a learning, research, and hands-on environment where Emirati students can experiment with and develop new technologies, including spacecraft design and mission planning.

The project is a part of the space fund announced last year, which is worth Dh3 billion ($820 million).

The space agency’s new offices close to the Dubai World Trade Centre serve as the academy’s home base.

Numerous students have already attended workshops, and early in the following year, training sessions will start.

During a Tuesday interview at the Dubai Airshow, Ms. Al Amiri informed sources that the agency needed to establish avenues for collaboration with the private sector.

“We always look at opportunities being created in the private sector; you can create new jobs just by expanding the number of private sector companies,” the speaker stated.

The first group of 51 students attended workshops in January, and in the first quarter of the following year, training sessions will start.

Thirteen students participated in the third workshop phase, compared to 26 in the second.

Following graduation, graduates participated in a three-month space mission experience where they learned about the nuances of software tools, ground operations, flight dynamics, subsystems, and mission planning.

The fund, according to Ms. Al Amiri, will also be used to develop some of the most important space projects for the nation, such as a mission to the main asteroid belt and a constellation of satellites that monitor climate change and aid in business funding.

“We carry out programs through the space fund, but you will also notice companies being spun out, as we advance the technological capabilities of the UAE in space and determine which technologies we would be better off developing versus buying,” she said.

“This is accomplished through a research, development, and commercialization agenda-driven science and technology road map.”

To attract both established businesses and start-ups, the UAE has established an economic zone specifically for space.

The economic zone already includes fourteen organizations. The space agency anticipates that the academy will produce entrepreneurs who will go on to launch businesses and increase the number of jobs in the industry.

“As far as the space sector is concerned, having an ambitious space program has a remarkable trickle-down effect in terms of interest in providing new opportunities for young people,” Ms. Al Amiri stated.

“We make sure that youth are consistently enrolled in the majority of our programs because an aging space industry is not what you want.”

According to her, all programs now include requirements for integrating recent graduates.
